On Tuesday, August 9th, Bellaviva Food Club met for dinner at Black Hog BBQ in Frederick. JJ, Rob, and Catey met Jamie and her two young boys at 7 pm. We sat at one of the 20 tables in the main dining room. There are also 3 outdoor picnic tables available for outdoor dining. The light from the front windows gave the room a comfortable, open feel. The high metal ceiling, neon signage, and chalkboards depicting cuts of pork and beef added to the authentic BBQ-joint atmosphere. There is a bar located at the back of the restaurant, away from the dining area. An open counter area provides a place for carryout orders. The restaurant is family-friendly, accommodating small dining companions with booster seats and high chairs. Our attentive and polite server took special care to bring the children’s food early so that they would not become restless during the wait.
Black Hog’s menu features 6 signature meat selections: smoked BBQ brisket, Arkansas beef BBQ, smoked pit ham, BBQ pulled pork shoulder, smoked sausage, and Carolina chopped BBQ with slaw. These are served as sandwiches (6.99 – 8.49), plates with one side, or platters with two sides. A one-meat plate with one side is $10.39. The menu also includes burgers, ribs, wings, salads, BBQ chicken, gumbo, and chili. There are 6 sides available: BBQ beans, cole slaw, mac n cheese, potato salad, southern style greens, and texas pinto beans and rice. Beverage choices include Coke soft drink products, iced tea, 17 beer selections, and 5 wine choices. JJ ordered the Luke’s BBQ burger with smoked beef brisket. Jamie selected the smoked pit ham plate with BBQ beans. Rob chose a house salad with vinaigrette dressing and 10 wings with Mike’s mustard sauce. Catey ordered the Arkansas beef BBQ plate with BBQ beans. Our two small dining companions split a cheeseburger and fries from the main menu. Unfortunately, there was not a separate kid’s menu for them.
Our food arrived quickly. The children had already finished most of their food and happily nibbled on meat shared from the adults’ plates. Black Hog offers four different BBQ sauces at the table to complement the food: BHB Original, Carolina Red, Kansas City, and Mike’s Mustard sauce. We were each able to add sauce to suit our individual tastes. Each one of us enjoyed our food and left Black Hog feeling satisfied with our dining experience.
