Three Bellaviva Food Club members (JJ, Rob, and Catey) met for dinner at Sumittra at 7 pm on Friday, August 5th. We entered the restaurant and were greeted almost immediately by one of the servers. This helped to alleviate the confusion of the narrow entranceway, where there is very little space between the door and the interior wall and no hostess station. We were shown to one of the twenty indoor tables. Sumittra also has three outdoor tables that allow fresh-air dining on the small front patio area. The décor of the restaurant is tasteful and modern with warm earth tones that complement the dark wood tables and exposed brick wall. The restrooms, located in the back of the main dining room, are shared with the restaurant on the second floor. The soft jazz music playing in the background adds to the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The restaurant is family-friendly and easily accommodates high chairs. However, there is no kid’s menu.
Sumittra’s menu consists of traditional Thai dishes, curries, and special entrees. The curry and traditional dishes range in price from $13 - $22. These dishes can be prepared with chicken, pork, NY steak, shrimp, or seafood. Special entrees range from $19 - $22 and include steak, fish, and seafood selections. There is also a fairly extensive vegetarian menu. Rob chose the Pla Nuang Manow, a steamed flounder filet served with chilis and cilantro lime sauce. JJ selected the Chu-Chee Salmon, grilled salmon wth chu-chee curry sauce. Both of these entrees include steamed vegetables. Catey chose the Gang Mussaman. This curry dish consists of beef, onions, potatoes, and carrots in a Mussaman curry sauce. The beverage menu includes soft drinks, a signature Thai iced tea, and wines sold by the glass ($6 - $8.50) or bottle ($20 - $32).
Our meals arrived in a timely fashion. However, each meal arrived individually so we had a brief wait before we could begin eating together. The food was beautifully presented on elegant white dishes and garnished artfully. JJ’s salmon was fork tender and the mildly spicy curry sauce complemented the fish without overpowering it. Rob’s flounder was fresh and the flavorful sauce was both refreshing and spicy. Catey’s curry was rich and complex. The chunks of beef and vegetables were tender and satisfying. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food and look forward to our next visit.
